Outline (in English)
This class aims to deepen your understanding of modern and contemporary Japanese history. The class captures modern and contemporary Japanese history with a focus on diplomacy, politics and economy. During the lessons, students will learn the flow of history from the perspective of how Japan pioneered in living in the each period of its history, namely the last years of the Edo period, the Meiji, Taisho, Showa eras and after World War II. In the first half of the each lesson, students will be enrolled with the basic learning (learning basic knowledge of modern and contemporary Japanese history; a quiz to confirm). In the second half of the lesson, students will conduct activities (pair talks, group discussions, oral presentations on contemporary topics and issues related to the theme). While the lessons will be conducted in an easy-to-understand Japanese language for International students, However, students are expected to be at the N1 level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
(Leaning activities outside of classroom)
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting, and to be prepared for the review quiz in the next class. Your study time is at least four hours for each class meeting.

Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Mid-term examination 25 %
Therm-end examination 25 %
Assignments 20 %

＊Students who have missed more than 4 class meetings will not be allowed to take the term-end exam, nor acquire credit.
*Students taking this class must attend the first and second weeks of class. If a student attends the class for the first time in the third week, he/she will not be allowed to take the class.
＊If there is a large number of applicants for a class, a selection will be made.

※This class was called "Modern and Contemporary History of Japan" until FY2023. Students who have earned credits in the past will not be able to take this class again.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
このクラスは、日本の近現代史について理解を深めることを目的とします。外交・政治・経済を中心に近現代史をとらえていきます。授業では、幕末から、明治、大正、昭和、現代までの大きな歴史の流れを、各時代を日本がどのように活路を拓いてきたのかという視点から、小テーマに切り分ける形で少しずつ学んでいきます。毎回、授業の前半では、①基本学習（日本の近現代史の基礎的知識の習得、確認のための小テスト）を行います。授業の後半では、②活動（テーマに関連する現代の話題や問題について、ペアトーク、グループディスカッション、口頭発表）を行います。
なお、授業は、留学生を対象とするため、平易な日本語で行われますが、受講者は日本語能力試験（JLPT）のＮ１レベルであることがのぞましいです。
到達目標Goal
国際的な視野から、各時代において日本がどのような状況や課題を克服してきたのか、さらにその流れがどのように現在の日本につながっているのかを理解した上で、それに対して自分の意見が述べられるようになることを到達目標とします。

毎回、授業の前半では、①基本学習（日本の近現代史の基礎的知識の習得、確認のための小テスト）を行います。授業の後半では、②活動（テーマに関連する現代の話題や問題について、ペアトーク、グループディスカッション、口頭発表）を行います。そのため、受講生の積極的な授業参加を期待します。中間・期末テストについては、筆記テスト（レポート）以外に、口頭発表（プレゼンテーション）を評価対象とする場合もあります。
なお、指導にあたっては、パワーポイントや映像資料なども使用して、理解の促進に役立てるようにします。
以下のファイルやシステムを用いて、授業をすすめますので、それに対応した端末とインターネット環境が必要です。
授業は「Power Point」「Word」「YouTubeの動画」を用いて、多様な活動を行います。
授業で用いるハンドアウトの配布、授業、小テスト、中間・期末テストについての告知は、「Google Classroom」上で行います。
また、小テストの実施や、宿題の提出、フィードバックも、「Google Classroom」上で行います。
さらに、授業後の自律的な学習（復習）のために、授業で用いた「Power Point」（PDF）を、「Google Classroom」にアップする場合があります。

この科目は２単位科目なので授業外の準備時間は、授業１回につき基本４時間です。毎回、授業後に必ず2時間程度の復習をしてください。また、授業前に、日本の近現代史に関する本を読んでおくことをおすすめします。
