Outline (in English)

This course is designed to enhance students' understanding of basic concepts in queer studies.
We cannot live unaffected by sex or gender. Every day we encounter and perform a wide range of social and cultural ideas and values that constitute the concept of gender.
In this class, students will study how our sexuality, bodies, and desires are historically and socially constructed. Students will understand the concept and historical background of gender and sexuality, and learn about the history of the feminist and LGBTQ+ movements in Japan and around the world.

Learning objectives:
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the following:
a) Have basic knowledge of queer studies.
b) Develop the ability to critically analyze representations of gender and sexuality.

Learning activities outside of the classroom:
Students are required to read the reference material by the next session and submit comment sheets (one to three hours for every session).

Grading criteria/Policy:
The final grade will be decided based on the following:
Discussion and participation (comment sheets, involvement during discussion): 20%
