Outline (in English)

This course introduces art scene in German speaking areas and countries from the end of 19. century(modernism) to the present era(contemporary art): It deals with mainly fine arts (including architecture and handcrafts-design), theatrical arts as well as classical and popular music. In the course, we also focus on "Deutsche(German)" or "deutsch(german-like)" as concepts that we might to feel got understand but actually could hardly understand without reflection. The works in the classes would lead us also reconsideration about general ideas or way of categorical thinking like "Japanese" "Japan" or "like Japanese".
【Learning Objectives】
・To develop an understanding of a wide range of topics relating to life, culture and society.
・Able to reflect on problematics like national identity or representational culture and express their own opinions and to write texts of a certain length about themes above.
【Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)】
・The standard preparation and revision time for this course is at least two hours each.
・There are prescribed review tasks.
【Grading criteria】
The course will be judged on the basis of a combination of 50% of ordinary marks (active participation and contribution to the class) and 50% of ordinary submitted assignments (report).
On the basis of this grading system, students who have achieved at least 60% of the objectives of this course will be considered to have passed the course.
