Outline (in English)

This course is designed to nurture well-educated global citizens who can accurately understand various situations surrounding the world today and also grasp the society and culture of their own countries from an objective and multifaceted viewpoint.
 The main focus of this class is to improve students’ reading speed and accuracy through phrase reading and oral reading / shadowing practice. Shadowing is a language learning technique in which you listen to a model and repeat what you hear with as little delay as possible. The main benefits of this training are 1) improved speech perception, 2) fluency in pronunciation and speech, and 3) enhanced speed and accuracy in reading comprehension.
This course will cover a wide range of significant issues confronting the world today. It expects students to gain an increased critical understanding of them in order to become responsible global citizens.
・Students will learn to read and listen efficiently.
・Students will develop critical reading and thinking skills.
・Students will acquire knowledge and skills to become autonomous learners of English.

Students are required to practice phrase reading and shadowing at least for 60 minutes a week outside of class.

Grading Criteria: Final Exam (50%) + Presentation (20%) + Assignments (20 %) + Participation (10%)
