Outline (in English)

This class develops communication skills in both spoken and written English needed to succeed in international business and enlarge knowledge of the international business world. At the beginning of every class, students take a short exam of dictation of English sentences frequently used in a business correspondence. There are twenty chapters and the chapter themes follow the real trading process such as Inquiry, Quotations, Offers, Discounts, Orders, Contracts, Opening L/C, Insurance, Shipment, Customs Clearance, Drafts, and so on, and students can have a knowledge of international business flow. Additionally, the main part of class has two phases: listening and reading of business related materials in TOEIC®, and writing business letters and e-mails. The former activity enables students to imagine a business scene and know the basic format of various documents and English expression used in a business world, and based on these knowledge, they try the latter activity—business correspondence. Beginning from writing formats such as “Leave Request,” “Cash-advanced Request,” “Expense Report,” and documents used in import/export, the final step is writing a business letter with a company letterhead and sending/receiving a business e-mail. All these writings are proofread and returned to students. Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant part from the text. However, they need not to prepare for the listening-mini test and all the writing tasks are performed only in class. Every student's overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Term-end examination 60%, mini-listening test average score 10%, and in class contribution 30%.
