Outline (in English)
While some attention will be given to all four skills, the emphasis is on oral communication, and we spend considerable classroom time practicing listening and speaking skills. Students will engage in classroom discussions,dialogue practice, and give short presentations on topics of interest.

This course is designed to develop practical oral communication skills for students to express themselves in English in a globalized world and workplace.

Students will improve their ability to express themselves in English in order to participate effectively in discussion and will learn how to give presentations and are engaging and informative.

This course will be given entirely in English and face to face. Students will participate in a variety of activities, but emphasis will be on listening and speaking. These activities include dialogues, pair and group discussions, and presentations based on short reading or audio-visual materials. Students are expected to come to class prepared by doing the assigned reading and other homework.
Feedback on students' performance will be given in class, as well as through written assignments in class and online the University LMS. Students may also correspond with the instructor using e-mail or visit during office hours.

Students are expected to prepare by reading ahead in the textbook,looking up unfamiliar vocabulary, and completing other activities assigned in class.
Approximately 1-2 hours of weekly homework are required of students in this class.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Student Presentations: 60%
Quizzes and other speaking activities: 20%
Class participation: 20%
In principle, students are allowed no more than 3 unexcused absences during the semester. Two late notices are treated as one absence (unless for a good reason--such as train delays, etc. Students who are absent on a presentation day must provide documentation, such as a COVID19 certificate.

Instructor will provide students with more detailed online feedback through the Hoppii system when necessary. Students are free to join this class just for the fall semester, but they must have access to and be able to use the textbook in class.

Students should have access to a computer to prepare their Power Point slides for presentations. Students may use the instructor's computer to give their presentation if they wish.
