Outline (in English)

One of the main objectives in this course is improvement of reading skill and growth of students’ vocabulary by reading English articles. The other objective is development of writing skill in English by translating Japanese sentences into English.
This class has three learning objectives.
First, students are expected to acquire the basic knowledge of English grammar, words and phrases which are necessary to read English.
Second, students are expected to acquire the ability to understand middle-length English articles by themselves.
Third, students are expected to acquire the basic faculty to write in English by the knowledge above.
Students will work on one unit in one class hour. First, they will read an article and confirm what they have and haven’t understood. Next, students will answer the translation questions to develop their English expression. After finishing a unit, students will take a quiz. Besides the textbook, students will write a short essay, which will be returned after the instructor corrects.
The final evaluating score between 60% and 100% will be awarded. Percentages of evaluation are Presentation (Reading and Translating) 10%, Quizzes 30%, Final exam 50%, and Writing 10 %. Credits will not be given to those who have missed 4 class hours or its equivalent in being late. When being late for thirty minutes is considered as one absence. Being late two times will be counted as one absence.
As for learning activities outside of classroom, students have to prepare and review for at least one hour. Students have to read articles and consult dictionaries about unknown words and phrases before class. After finishing a unit, students have to reread the article and review what you didn’t understand for quizzes.
