Outline (in English)
This is a content based course with the objective of helping students improve their confidence and skills in overall English communication as well as to increase their knowledge of the world with an emphasis on American social, political, and popular culture.

Learning English for communicating in a global society.
到達目標Goal
This course is designed to develop language skills necessary for students to express themselves in English. The emphasis is on oral communication, and we will practice listening and speaking skills. Students will also practice writing paragraphs and short essays.

Students will participate in a variety of activities that involve all four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be asked to read short articles, prepare for discussion by briefly writing their opinions, and then participate in discussions, usually in pairs. Reading comprehension will be checked, and new vocabulary will be reviewed after matching activities. Feedback is obtained through quiz scores.

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students are expected to complete a writing assignment and/or study for a quiz every week in preparation for class. This writing assignment will usually require research.
Students should expect to spend at least two hours on homework/studying outside of class, on average. Some weeks will be more, and some weeks will be less.
テキスト（教科書）Textbooks
There is no textbook. Handouts will be given in class.
However, ALL students will be required to buy a subscription
to an online reading software. This should cost roughly about
2,750 yen for a whole year, unless the bookstore increases the
price. I will tell you the details on the first day of class

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Class participation: 30%
Quizzes, writing assignments, presentations:70%
Departmental guidelines state that more than three absences will result in automatic failure of the course.
Obviously, when you are absent, it will hurt your class participation grade.

Always bring a dictionary to class (paper or electronic OK).
Translation software is strictly forbidden. You may use your
phone in class ONLY for a dictionary app. Or, on a rare
occasion, they could be used for purposes related to the
class, only with the express permission I recommend using a
dedicated electronic dictionary.
Chatgpt or other AI tools may not be used. ANY use of Chatgpt
or other AI tools on an assignment will result in a zero for the
assignment and possible disciplinary action by the university.
Plagiarism is never ok.

This is a challenging course, but you will learn a lot, and improve your English a lot. Because the course is challenging, you will have a proud sense of accomplishment when you have finished the course.
