Outline (in English)
1. Giving students opportunity to practice and develop their communication skills including speaking, reading, writing, listening and presentation;
2. To improve reading comprehension via Graded Readers, textbook units and news articles;
3. To foster student understanding of current issues that relate to using English about Japan and the World;
4. To develop a critical approach toward the development of presentation of student research and opinions through speaking, writing and presentation techniques.

1. Giving students opportunity to practice and develop their communication skills including speaking, reading, writing, listening and presentation;
2. To improve reading comprehension via Graded Readers, textbook units and news articles;
3. To foster student understanding of current issues that relate to using English about Japan and the World;
4. To develop a critical approach toward the development of presentation of student research and opinions through speaking, writing and presentation techniques.
到達目標Goal
Media and Culture: Communicating In English To Explain Japan To The World
Students will find this course useful for building their English and academic abilities and broadening their understanding of the world. Topics may include: media and culture; women's empowerment in social and economic life; career goals; modern Japanese culture and subcultures; nature and environment; human health, nutrition and exercise; global economic development and international relations. Students will use graded reader books, journals, a textbook and practical English conversation handouts to improve their communication skills. Tests will include written and oral types and informal and power point presentation formats.

Pre-reading of assignments; completion of textbook homework assignments; preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
No more than 3 absences (or 4 absences for Academic English for the Department of Global Politics) per term are allowed.

Participation 20%; Written assignments 10%; 2 Written Tests 30%; Informal Group Presentation 20%; Final Individual Powerpoint Presentation 20%; Students should be aware that no more than 3 absences (or 4 absences for Academic English for the Department of Global Politics) per term are allowed
