Outline (in English)
In this course, students will read various news stories reported in the English- speaking world. They will be encouraged to express their opinions in English and share them with other students. They will develop their critical thinking skills by taking part in class activities. In the fall semester, the course will cover the features of various medium and journalistic jobs.
In this course students will learn to:
- grasp the main ideas of news articles
- express their opinions about news stories in English
- understand the audiovisual materials
Students need to prepare in advance for each week’s lesson. Preparation is designed to take approximately one hour. In addition to preparation, students will be given assignments to review.
Evaluation will be based on Hosei University grading criteria, as follows:
Quiz 20%, participation in class activity 30%, assignment and submission 10%, final assignment 40%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
この授業では、１年次に習得した４つの英語の運用能力（reading, listening, writing, speaking）を用いて、国際語としての英語を学びます。英語圏で報道されるニュースの記事を読むことを通して、世界の文化を理解し、尊重する態度とともに、自文化を相対化し、批判的に分析する力を養います。秋学期は、春学期に学んだことを踏まえたうえで、メディアやそれを取り巻く環境についても広く学びます。
到達目標Goal
１．英語で書かれたニュース記事を読み、英語で要点を説明したり、自分の意見を論理的な文章でまとめたりすることができるようになる。
２．ニュース形式の教材を視聴し、要点を正確に理解できるようになる。
３．メディアの特性を理解し、ニュース記事を批判的に分析できるようになる。

学期末試験
授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
英語で書かれたニュース記事を読み、要約することを中心に、授業の内容に合わせた課題を出します。本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。詳細は初回授業で説明します。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
- 平常点 70%
（小テスト20%、授業中の活動への参加20%、提出物30%）
- 学期末課題 30%
＊ 4回以上欠席した場合、原則として単位の取得が認められません。
学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
グループワークやペアワークなどのアクティブラーニングが好評だったため、今年度も積極的に取り入れていきたいと思います。このほか、幅広い話題のニュースの記事を取り上げるので、社会の動きに敏感になったという感想がありました。
