Outline (in English)
In this course, students will read various news stories reported in the English-speaking world. They will be encouraged to express their opinions in English and share them with other students. They will develop critical thinking skills by taking part in activities in class. In the spring semester, students will study the structures of English newspapers.
Through the course, students will be able to:
- catch the main ideas of news articles
- express their opinions in English about topics mentioned in the article
- understand the points of audiovisual materials
Students need to prepare in advance for each lesson. Preparation is designed to take one hour approximately. In addition to preparation, students will be given assignments to review.
Evaluation will be based on Hosei University grading criteria, as follows:
Quiz 20%, participation in class activities 20%, assignment and submission 30%, final assignment 30%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
この授業では、１年次に習得した４つの英語の運用能力（reading, listening, writing, speaking）を用いて、国際語としての英語を学びます。英語圏で報道されるニュースの記事を読むことを通して、世界の文化を理解し、尊重する態度とともに、自文化を相対化し、批判的に分析する力を養います。春学期はとくに、自分の意見を英語でわかりやすく伝えたり、相手の意見を理解したりすることを目指します。

１．英語で書かれたニュース記事を読み、要点を英語で説明できるようになる。
２．英語で書かれたニュース記事を読み、自分の意見や考えを英語で説明できるようになる。
３．ニュース形式の教材を視聴し、要点を正確に理解できるようになる。

本授業は予習を前提に進めます。準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。詳細は、初回授業で説明します。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

英語で書かれたニュース記事を読み、要約することを中心に、授業の内容に合わせた課題を出します。本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。詳細は初回授業で説明します。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
- 平常点 70%
（小テスト20%、授業中の活動への参加20%、提出物30%）
- 学期末課題 30%
＊ 4回以上欠席した場合、原則として単位の取得が認められません。

グループワークやペアワークなどのアクティブラーニングが好評だったため、今年度も積極的に取り入れていきたいと思います。このほか、幅広い話題のニュースの記事を取り上げるので、社会の動きに敏感になったという感想がありました。
