Outline (in English)
This is a Fall semester English course for Second Year students who have chosen English as their main Second Language. This class will assist students to further develop their English proficiency, by shifting to more content-based English-learning.

This is a Fall semester English course for Second Year students who have chosen English as their main Second Language. This class will assist students to further develop their English proficiency, by shifting to more content-based English-learning.
到達目標Goal
Students will learn about cultures & social practices from around the English-speaking world; and will also learn how to better explain Japanese culture to English-speaking people in this Global Society. Students will have to learn how to think critically [in-depth] about important Global Issues; and will have to effectively express their own thoughts and opinions in English.

Students will be challenged to integrate their skills in English listening, speaking, reading, & writing in an advanced manner, via exposure to authentic English materials such as English News videos & audio, and inspirational video/audio talks (including TED Talks). Students will then be required to practice their English communication skills Online, via pair practice conversations with their classmates & professor.
Feedback will be given to students by spoken word, in Real Time, in classes; sometimes via e-mail messages; and also via class Grade.

''How was your Summer Break?''[Discussing Summer events in smooth, Modern English, using the English Past tense.] News video #1/TED Talk video #1.
Summer Past Tense practice and vocabulary (a range of adjectives); with 'EQ' responses thereto. Students will be asked to express English opinions, re: News video and/or TED Talk #1.
第2回[対面/face to face]:News or TED video #1, part 2: asking students to express active opinions in English. Students will introduce themselves to each other in modern English, via Online video/audio 'chat'.
How to write and speak your own opinions, in English...and how to EXPLAIN them.
第3回[対面/face to face]:Asking & answering about subway/train directions, in English.
Students will learn and practice how to reply to requests for subway/train directions, in spoken English.
第4回[対面/face to face]:Hallowe'en, part 1: what are Hallowe'en customs; and in what countries has Hallowe'en traditionally been celebrated? [Using the FUTURE Tense, in English.]
Students will be asked to investigate, write down, and discuss Hallowe'en traditions, in English, using the FUTURE Tense.
第5回[対面/face to face]:Hallowe'en, part 2: Using 'would' & 'will'.
Students will pair-practice correct use of 'would' + past tense, & 'will' + future tense, to describe possible Hallowe'en costumes & activities.
第6回 [対面/face to face]:News video/TED video #2.
Expressing your opinions about Current Affairs News videos, in English.
News/TED Talk #2: students will be asked to say their views/opinions, in active, dynamic spoken English.
第7回[対面/face to face]:News video/TED Talk #2 (continued), with questions about it.
Students will continue to speak their opinions (in English) to classmates, about a Current Affairs topic/TED Talk.
第8回[対面/face to face]:''The Seven W's'': (Questions about Who...? /What...? /When...? /Where...? /Why...? /Which...? /How...?)
Students will learn how to verbally ask others, and to reply in smooth English, to questions about ''the Seven W's".
第9回[対面/face to face]:Thanksgiving customs (& discussion in English), re: Thanksgiving customs in the U.S.A./Canada.
Students will be asked to suss out traditional Thanksgiving customs in the U.S. & Canada...& to explain them in spoken English.
第10回[対面/face to face]:Thanksgiving (continued); and possibly a video/audio exercise about Thanksgiving.
Students may be asked to answer questions about a video/audio exercise about Thanksgiving...and to pair-practice in spoken English, five things that they are thankful for.
第11回[対面/face to face]:What are your plans for Christmas and OhShoGatsu?
Also: English video/song exercise about Christmas.
Pair practice: students will be asked to write down & then practice verbally (in English) their Future plans for Christmas/ OhShoGatsu.
第12回[対面/face to face]:Discussing answers to the Christmas video/song exercise...and to Christmas/OhShoGatsu plans.
Students will answer video/song questions; and will actively speak about Christmas/OhShoGatsu plans, using polite FUTURE Tense English.
第13回[対面/face to face]:SPEAKING exam, re: topics studied and discussed during the Fall semester.
Speaking exam. Students will be asked to reply, in smooth spoken English, to questions about the topics that we learned & practiced in the Fall semester.
第14回[対面/face to face]:''How was your OhShoGatsu?'' + Students will be asked to speak about their Winter Break plans.
Students will speak about their recent OhShoGatsu activities...and about their future Winter Break plans.
授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Please do homework well before the deadline [NOT ''ichiyazukke'']; please learn to wake up early, and to arrive in class ON TIME [not late]; and please keep a weekly notebook/binder for this class, using pen.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

A textbook might be chosen, depending on students' levels & requirements. Also, some handouts will be distributed to students. In addition, some News videos & TED Talks may be assigned as in-class or at-home viewing (with questions about those videos).

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Tentatively, grading may depend on in-class responses (approximately 25%); speaking exams and spoken replies (approximately 25%); attendance/on-time arrival (approximately 15%); class participation/motivation (20%); and homework (15%).
*IMPORTANT: A MAXIMUM OF THREE ABSENCES IS ALLOWED...& ONE LATE IS EQUIVALENT TO HALF AN ABSENCE.*
