Outline (in English)
In this course, students will improve their confidence and skills in overall English communication while familiarizing themselves with the contemporary cultural and social concerns of the English speaking world.

This is the second part of “Consumption and Culture in the English Speaking World.” The aim of the course is to continue assisting students in becoming fluent English speakers by sharing their ideas on cultural and social content popularly discussed in the West.
到達目標Goal
In this course, students will read a variety of content-based articles, and readings will be supplemented with listening exercises to help them improve their fluency in English. The classes are designed for pair and group discussions to provide the students with a friendly environment to express themselves in English. Students will also be required to complete some writing tasks such as paragraphs and short essays to express their ideas in a more organized way.

Students will participate in a variety of activities that involve all four skills, but with a special emphasis on reading and speaking. They will be asked to read short articles, and prepare for pair or group discussions. Feedback will be mostly provided during class. Written feedback might also be provided when it is deemed necessary.

Consumption and History
To warm up, students will make some discussion on the main topic of the class. They will start reading the assigned article.

Consumption and History
Open-book quiz will be conducted for a deeper analysis of the subject. This will be followed by a class discussion to share ideas and develop understanding.

History of Architecture and Le Corbusier
New reading material will be covered. Some visuals will be provided for understanding and discussion.

Consumption of Architecture and “Gemütlich”
A new idea will be introduced to students to deepen perspective regarding architectural forms. Students will be supported with appropriate visual for the purpose.

Message-Saturated Spatial Forms and Urban Architecture
To prepare for the first round of group presentations, another important aspect will be discussed in relation to the previous class contents and forms commonly observed around us.

Consumption of Architecture and “Free Plan”
Last important aspect of the article will be discussed. Unforeseen limits of “Free Plan” and reasons behind Le Corbusier’s choice will be the main focus of discussion.

Class will be spared for mini-presentations.
Debate questions will be assigned for the presenters.

Historical Figures and Biography Publications
Assigned article will be read and examined by means of the questions provided by the teacher. Students will work in pairs first.

Biography Reading and Consuming the Past
An open-book quiz question will be given to students so that they can map out their ideas on the subject.
This will be helpful for the discussion which will follow subsequently in a debate style.

Debate questions will be assigned for presenters.

History and Narrativization
Students will understand the importance of narrative constructed in autobiography in this class.

A Final Review and Discussion on Consumerism
Last mini-presentation session will be held.
Following this, main topic of the course will be summarized.

Final exam of the semester will be conducted
授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students are expected to complete assignments every week in preparation for discussion. The assignments might require research.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

No textbook is required. All materials will be provided by the professor.

Students are required to consult dictionaries and other materials provided by the professor to complete their weekly course preparations.
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Class participation: 20%
Group Presentation: 30%
Writing assignments: 10%
Final Exam: 40%
More than 3 absences will result in automatic failure of the course.
