Outline (in English)
In this course, students will improve their confidence and skills in overall English communication while familiarizing themselves with the contemporary cultural and social concerns of the English speaking world.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
This is a course aiming to assist students in becoming fluent English speakers by sharing their ideas on cultural and social content popularly discussed in the English speaking world.
到達目標Goal
In this course, students will read a variety of content-based articles, and readings will be supplemented with listening exercises to help them improve their fluency in English. The classes are designed for pair and group discussions to provide the students with a friendly environment to express themselves in English. Students will also be required to complete some writing tasks such as paragraphs and short essays to express their ideas in a more organized way.

Students will participate in a variety of activities that involve all four skills, but with a special emphasis on reading and speaking. They will be asked to read short articles, and prepare for pair or group discussions. Feedback will be mostly provided during class. Written feedback might also be provided when it is deemed necessary.

Introduction to the notion of consumerism as understood in the English speaking world
Getting to know each other; student introductions & class guidelines.
2[対面/face to face]:Reading Content 1:
Consumption and Creating Spectacles
To warm up, students will make some discussion on the main topic of the class. They will start reading the assigned article.
Important terms and will be introduced and explained.
3[対面/face to face]:Reading Content 1:
Consumption and Creating Spectacles
Topic will be analyzed in greater detail. Students will be provided useful tips and supportive questions to understand the subject in focus.
4[対面/face to face]:Reading Content 1:
Consumption and Creating Spectacles
A quiz will be given in this class to test student knowledge on the topic so far.
This will be followed by a discussion on aspects which need more clarification.
5[対面/face to face]:Reading Content 2:
Spectacular Object and Ecological Crisis
Quiz results will be revealed with correct answers.
Following this, second reading article will be covered with an additional emphasis on the already-learned aspects of consumerism.

Spectacular Objects and Ecological Crisis of Fashion
Class debate will be done on a given question by drawing ideas and examples from the main reading content assigned for the class.

Reading Content 2:
Spectacular Objects and Ecological Crisis of Wrong “Monotzukuri”
Class will start with presentations.
Following this, students will discuss what “monotzukuri” is to develop an in-depth understanding of the reading article. Finally, the article will be summarized.
A written homework will be assigned on the main topic of discussion.

Consumption and Art
To prepare for the second round of group presentations, consumption and Art relation will be discussed.
Following this, students will start reading the assigned article and watch some related content to develop deeper perspective on the subject.

Video content will be revised.
Following this, topic will be analyzed in greater detail.
10[対面/face to face]:Group Presentations Round 2
Reading Content 4:
Spectacular Objects in Art and Art Learning
Class will start with presentations.
Following this, last article will be covered with a class discussion on the main topic. Some important terminologies will will also be introduced.

Spectacular Objects in Art and Art Learning
Reading content will be analyzed in greater detail. Students will be provided useful tips and supportive questions to understand the subject in focus.
Students will be also reminded that there will be a written quiz in the following class.

Spectacular Objects in Art and Art Learning
Class will start with quiz.
Following this, reading content will be revised, and answers of the quiz will be discussed.
13[対面/face to face]:Group Presentations Round 3
A Final Review and Discussion on Consumerism
Last group of presenters will complete their presentations.
Following this, main topic of the course will be summarized as a discussion session.

Final exam of the semester will be conducted
授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students are expected to complete assignments every week in preparation for discussion. The assignments might require research.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Class participation: 20%
Group Presentation: 30%
Writing assignments: 10%
Final Exam: 40%
More than 3 absences will result in automatic failure of the course.
