Outline (in English)

Students in this class will improve 4 skills in English, learning cultures and societies of English speaking world using several pieces of English literature as material. Students read several extracts from famous works of English literature, and watch some movies based on these works. Rapid reading skills are indispensable for reading and understanding a coherent story written in English within a class period. In this course, students will read a story in rhythm with a voice reading from the audio book, foreseeing how the story will develop, which is an essential skill for rapid reading. In addition to reading, students will work on various activities to improve their ability to express their own ideas in English, such as writing assignments, presentation and discussion. Considering the backgrounds, values and importance of these literary works form English speaking world will enhance students' cross-cultural understanding as well as their English skills.
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend one hour to understand the course content.
Final grade will be calculated according to the following process; presentation (30%), term-end report (30%), and assignments and in-class contribution (40%).
