Outline (in English)

This course is designed to help students develop their reading and listening skills. Students will read essays on a wide range of issues in the world today and listen to conversations on a variety of related topics, thinking critically about them. Students will learn how to comprehend the structure and the argument of the passage and acquire the information they need. They will practice summarizing the passage they have read and commenting on related topics. The course will offer instruction of and practice in the development of effective listening skills. Students will also give a short presentation, integrating skills and knowledge acquired during the course and developing their confidence in English communication.

The goals are to develop the abilities to understand and summarize the essays accurately, grasp the main points of spoken materials, read aloud effectively, and communicate one's thoughts and opinions on the topics.

Completing assignments (preparation for the class, including listening to a recording, reading the text and answering questions) before each class meeting is essential. Students are expected to spend at least one hour per week preparing for and reviewing each class.

Grading criteria: active class participation, assignments and quizzes (50%), final examination (25%), final presentation (25%). In principle, no more than 3 absences per semester are allowed.
