Outline (in English)

This course is designed to nurture well-educated global citizens who can accurately understand various situations surrounding the world today and also grasp the society and culture of their own countries from an objective and multifaceted viewpoint.

The main focus of this class is to improve students' reading speed and accuracy through phrase reading and oral reading practice. The course will examine American culture and society. It expects students to gain an increased critical understanding of them and express themselves effectively.
・Students will learn to read efficiently.
・Students will develop critical and analytical reading and thinking skills.
・Students will acquire knowledge and skills to become autonomous learners of English.

Students are required to practice phrase reading and oral reading at least for 60 minutes a week outside of class.

Grading Criteria: Final Exam (50%) + Presentation (20%) + Assignments (20 %) + Participation (10%)

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives

世界を取り巻く様々な状況を英語で正確に理解して、それを批判的に読み解き、その上で自国の社会や文化についても客観的かつ多面的な視点で捉えることのできる教養豊かな国際人を養成する。

到達目標Goal

英文を正確にすばやく読み取る力を養う。そのために英文を意味のかたまりごとに読み（チャンク・リーディング），ある一定の速度で安定的に読む訓練を行う。音読とチャンク・リーディングは車の両輪のようなものであるから、音読練習も時間をかけて行う。意味のかたまりを意識し、英語らしい読み方を身につけることによって、リスニング力やライティング力も鍛えることができる。

授業の進め方と方法Method(s)（学期の途中で変更になる場合には、別途提示します。 /If the Method(s) is changed, we will announce the details of any changes. ）

ペア / グループワークを多用し、主体的に、対話的に、そしてより深く学び合う参加型（＝協働学習）の授業を行う。英文をかたまりごとに分け、前から読んで理解する訓練を行う。各章の終わりには日英の変換練習を行い、ライティング・スピーキング力の向上に繋げていく。提出課題に対しては、個別またはクラス全体のフィードバックを行う。使用するCALL（コンピュータ支援の語学学習）教室の特性を活かして、様々な学習ツール（グループワーク機能、音声＆文字チャット、音声録音など）を利用しながらクラスメートと共に効率よく学習する。洋楽、洋画、TOEICの問題等も副教材として積極的に活用する。
