Outline (in English)
Students will improve their reading and listening skills through multiple activities in this course. Students will be able to:
- comprehend a lengthy passage about various topics in English
- understand the main idea and structure of a passage on a familiar topic
- use an English dictionary correctly in order to read independently
Students are expected to do weekly preparation and a course review. Detailed guidance is given by the instructor in the first week. Assignments are designed to take approximately one hour.
Evaluation will be based on Hosei University criteria for grading. The methods of grading will be:
- Quiz (Mid-term and final) 50%
- Participation in class activities 50%
* Students who are absent for four or more lessons will be failed automatically.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
この授業では、さまざまな英語のテキストを読んだり聞いたりして、内容を正確に理解する力を養います。読む力では、段落ごとの要点やテキスト全体の構成を意識しながら、身近な話題に関する英文を精読します。聴く力では、読解のテキストに関連する内容や、そのほかの日常的な話題に関するテキストを視聴して、ストーリーの展開や登場人物たちの意図を正確に理解することを目指します。どちらにおいても、語彙を増やすことや批判的思考力（クリティカル・シンキング）を身につける機会を取り入れます。

① 身近な話題に関する英文を読んだり見たり聞いたりして、内容を正確に理解することができるようになる。
② 身近な話題に関する英文を読んで、文章の構成や要点を把握することができるようになる。
③ 身近な話題に関する英文を読むために、英語の辞書を効果的に用いることができるようになる。
