Outline (in English)

One of the main objectives in this course is improvement of reading skill and developing of students’ vocabulary. Students will read English passages discussing social issues and recent events, paying much attention to paragraph structure and relationship between paragraphs. The ability to read and comprehend the argument of the passage and to acquire the knowledge and information through English will be improved by reading articles.
Another objective is formation and expression of students’ own opinion. Emphasis should be put on understanding the writer’s feeling and intention. However, students should not accept the writer’s opinion easily if they have questions or doubts. Students have to form their own opinion after they find out the difference between the writer’s opinion and theirs. In addition, they will practice summarizing the passages they read and writing the opinion which they formed in English.
Listening skill is also regarded as an important factor. Listening skill will be developed through the quizzes which the instructor makes from passages of the textbook. In some cases, other materials will be used for listening quizzes.

This class has five learning objectives.
First, They are expected to acquire the knowledge of English grammar, words and phrases which is necessary to read English.
Second, students are expected to acquire the ability to understand middle-length English articles by themselves
Third, students are expected to acquire the capacity to grasp logic of them, considering what role each paragraph has.
Fourth, students are expected to improve their listening skill through exercises.
Fifth, students are expected to acquire the faculty to write their own thoughts about articles in English.

The final evaluating score between 60% and 100% will be awarded. Percentages of evaluation are Presentation (Reading and Translating) 10%, Quizzes 30%, Final exam 50%, and Writing 10%. Credits will not be given to those who have missed 4 class hours or its equivalent in being late. When being late for thirty minutes is considered as one absence. Being late two times will be counted as one absence.

As for learning activities outside of classroom, students have to prepare and review for at least one hour. Students have to read texts and consult dictionaries about unknown words and phrases before class. After finishing reading an article, students have to reread it and review what you didn’t understand for quizzes. As students answer the English definitions of words in quizzes, they have to consult an English-English dictionary.
