Outline (in English)

Course outline:
As events in other countries can have a significant impact on our domestic politics, business, or daily lives (and vice versa), we all have to pay attention to both worldwide and domestic news media every day.
Since not all news items are translated to Japanese, students will be required to obtain information from English news media around the world.
In this course, students will learn how to read and listen to English for mass communication.
Learning Objectives:
Students are expected to master some expressions peculiar to the English news media; understand the contents and main messages of the news articles they read; comprehend the contents of news clips they listen to; acquire a habit of reading up on subjects they are not familiar with.
Learning activities outside of classroom:
Students will be expected to review and prepare for each lesson, which will require 1 hour. In their preparation, they should try to find out and learn English expressions peculiar to the news media; gain accurate information from the texts; listen to the streaming audio contents; independently read up on the unfamiliar subjects in the texts.
Grading Criteria/Policy:
Term-end examination: 60%, quiz for each chapter: 15%, class contribution: 25%. Students with four absences are disqualified. Being late for three times will be counted as one absence.
