Outline (in English)

This course will focus on reading articles and essays on United States to help students improve their vocabulary and comprehension of what is written in English. Students will also be required to learn how to use dictionaries and reference books as well as acquire knowledge about current and historic topics of the USA.
The goals of this course are to use the skills of quick or close reading appropriately. Students will be expected to make an accurate translation of English text into Japanese and give an outline of the text paying close attention to the relation between paragraphs. Students should also learn general information about American society that would be necessary when trying to understand current issues through TV or newspapers.
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant part of the text with consulting dictionary. Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting. If you fail to make preparation for the class, you will lose many points or will be considered as absent.
Grading will be decided based on term-end examination (60 %) and in class contribution (40%). As a rule, anyone who are absent more than three times will lose a credit. Students who come 30 minutes or more late will be considered absent. You will be considered absent one time if you come late three times.
