Outline (in English)

This course aims to build a historical perspective on important issues that have shaped the development of the Japanese economy by reviewing the contrasting economic mechanisms between the high-growth era around the 1960s to 1970s and the two lost decades after the bubble burst in the early 1990s. Some important issues to be tackled in this course are the shrinking of local regions, expanding income gaps among people, and the accelerating decline of baby births. The class is provided with stylized facts and economic explanations by economists, together with interesting thoughts from other scholars, including sociologists in order to widen and deepen the academic expertise of students who wish to contribute to policy discussions for growth out of the long stagnation. Students are expected to prepare for the class for two hours prior to the class and to follow up each class with two hours of review. Students are graded with in-class discussion (50%) and the term paper (50%).
