Outline (in English)

[Course outline] In this course, students will learn about macro-scale biological phenomena, and, as such, the course materials focus on interactions among organisms, ecosystem, and biodiversity. In addition, the course will discuss how the course materials relate to various issues that the human society faces today, such as problems associated with environmental degradation and resource management. As a whole, this course provides an opportunity to learn the biological basis of news, etc. that students may be exposed in their daily life.
[Learning objectives] The course objectives are: to acquire basic understanding of macro-scale biological phenomena; to understand how the class materials relate to various environmental problems; and to be able to apply the acquired understanding to problem solving.
[Learning activities outside of classroom] In addition to attending classes, students are expected to review contents of individual lectures, thoroughly read distributed reading materials, and utilize the online learning support system, as needed. Standard amounts of time to be spent for this purpose are two hours each for preparation and review.
[Grading criteria/policy] Final grade will be determined based on a final exam (50%) and participation/in-class performance (50%).
