Outline (in English)

This course introduces the ontological turn in cultural anthropology to students taking this course. In doing so, this course takes cases primarily from relationships of human with nonhuman beings around the world, especially with ghosts and mysterious beings in Japan (so-called yōkai).

By the end of the course, students should be abe to do the followings:
-A. Understanding other cultures by applying concepts and theories of contemporary anthropology.
-B. Explaining various representations of nonhuman beings in popular culture as well as your personal experiences through anthropological concepts.

Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.

Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end paper: 40%、Short reports : 60%
