Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
This lecture targets beginners in law and explains the basic knowledge of law. As a relationship between individuals, we aim to understand the basic concepts concerning the contract law and to acquire rudimentary legal knowledge. Furthermore, as a relationship between the nation and individual,we study the Constitution of Japan and fundamental human rights. Also, as a field related to international law, we also learn about the treaty and the EU law, which is the relation between nations.

(Learning Objectives)
The goal of this class is to acquire and understand the general and basic knowledge of law. The purpose of this course is to enable students who have never studied law to acquire the basics of law and to understand the structure and basic principles of modern law. This course is designed to help students who have never studied law to acquire basic legal knowledge and qualities required as citizens of a law-abiding country, and to acquire the basic legal knowledge that a sovereign citizen of a democratic country should have. Specific objectives of the course are as follows
(1) To acquire the meaning and content of the basic concepts and terms of law, and to understand the basic structure and system of modern law.
(2) To understand the role of law in society, and how social conflicts can be resolved by law and how individual rights can be protected.
(3) Understand the significance of constitutionalism and the basic principles and structure of the Japanese Constitution.
4) Understand the basics of EU law.

(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Please read the textbook and handouts carefully. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Students will be graded on the basis of their performance on the final exam, which will consist of symbol selection questions (80%), and in-class tests and reports (20%). Grades are given on a 100-point scale, with 60 points or more being awarded for credit.
