Outline (in English)

In this course, how the Western art was introduced in Japan during the Meiji/Taisho/Showa era will be discussed from the artists’ and people’s point of view. The origin and history of art museums in Japan, and also the function and role of art museums today will be discussed.

The goal of the course is following:
1) Acquiring the knowledge how the Western art was introduced to the artists in Japan during the Edo/Meiji/Taisho/Showa era (1600s - early 1900s).
2) Acquiring the knowledge how the Western art was exhibited to the public during the Meiji/Taisho/Showa era (1860s - 1930s).
3) Acquiring the knowledge on the functions of art museum.

The lecture will be conducted online using the slides including the picture of art works. A simple report will be requested every class for checking your understanding on the theme. Also, you can add a question about the lecture. You can get some feedbacks for the report and questions on the next class. In addition to weekly reports, a term paper is requested.
No textbooks are designated. References for art works would be given in the lecture.
Although no preparation is requested, viewing art works is recommended for more fruitful experience. I expect you of spending two hours per week for the lecture, and for example, spending one hour for weekly reports and a term paper, and one hour for viewing art works.

Your grade in this course is to be evaluated based on the following basis.
Weekly report: 50 %
Term paper: 50 %
Note that the term paper is mandatory, but not enough, to get the pass-mark.
The first class is guidance and introduction for the course. I expect you to view it if you seriously consider taking the course.
