Outline (in English)
【Course outline】
Language is a system of linguistic symbols that combines the expressive aspect of the form of speech with the content aspect of the form of meaning. The academic field that focuses on the clarification of this system is called "linguistics”. The science of sound, or phonetics, studies all aspects of communication using speech, the expressive aspect of language.
The phenomenon in which sound itself evokes a certain image is called "sound symbolism". In this class, we aim to explain phonetics as clearly as possible using the phenomenon of sound symbolism as a subject.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1. To understand what happens when humans speak using speech sounds, and how individual sounds (consonants and vowels) and their sequences are pronounced.
2. To understand how sounds appear as acoustic vibrations, based on concepts such as inhibitory sounds, resonant sounds, and pressure changes.
3. To understand the articulation and acoustics of vowels and murmurs through examples of sound symbols.
4. To learn how to discover and analyze examples of familiar sound symbols.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Phonetics is just like sports. Even if you can't pronounce something, you can learn to do it with practice. Please try to understand the mechanism of pronunciation and try to reproduce it.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end examination: 50%、Assignments : 30%、in class contribution: 20%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
「言語」は，音声の形式という表現面と意味の形式という内容面が結びついた言語記号が単位であるようなシステムであり，このシステムの解明を対象とする学問分野は「言語学」と呼ばれています。この「言語」の表現面である「音声を使ったコミュニケーション」のあらゆる側面を研究するのが音の科学，すなわち「音声学」です。
音そのものがある特定のイメージを喚起する現象を「音象徴」といいます。この授業では，音象徴という現象を題材に，「音声学」をできるだけ分かりやすく解説することを目指します。
到達目標Goal
1. ヒトが音声を使って話すときに何が起きているか，個々の音（子音・母音）とその連続を発音するしくみを理解する。
2. 音がどのような音響振動として現れるか，阻害音，共鳴音，圧力変化などの概念から理解する。
3. 音象徴の例を通して，母音や濁音の調音と音響を理解する。
4. 身近な音象徴の例を自ら発見し，分析する方法を身につける。

まず「言語学」は言語をどういうものとして見ているかを概説し，表現面の形式である「音韻」が実質である「音声」によって実現されているという発想に慣れ，「音象徴」と呼ばれる現象の分析に入ります。具体的には，音声がある振る舞いをする時に「なぜそのような振る舞いをするのか」を，音声学で必要になる概念や道具立てを使って分析・研究・理解していきます。

音声学はスポーツと同じです。できない発音があっても，訓練すればだれでもできるようになります。発音するしくみを理解し，再現できるよう努めてください。
本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、各2時間を標準とします。
