Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
In this course, students will consider the period from the establishment of early modern society to the formation of modern society from various aspects such as politics, foreign relations, social economy, and culture. The course will consist mainly of lectures, incorporating new results of recent research on Japanese history, while developing the ability to "think" rather than "memorize" history. In order to enable students to "think" based on historical documents, important historical documents will be presented and their interpretations will be considered as appropriate, so that students will be able to draw a concrete historical image from historical documents.

【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
The course is designed to provide students with the knowledge necessary for teaching Japanese history in junior high and high schools, how to research historical facts and how to logically structure the overall picture. The course will explain how the descriptions in the textbooks are based on the historical evidence, tracing back to the academic theories on which they are based. The goal is to develop the ability to construct an image of Japanese history (including culture) from the early modern period to the modern period, supported by rich and diverse values, while always maintaining the international environment and geographical perspective of Japan in the world.

【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
Review the handouts and notes distributed in class. Students should also review the historical documents presented in the course and develop an attitude of thinking based on the historical documents. The standard preparation and review time for this course is 2 hours each.

【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Grading will be based on the final exam (60%) and reports, etc. (40%). The final exam will be evaluated based on the level of understanding of the course content, and the reports, etc. will be evaluated based on the richness of the responses to the assignments.
