Outline (in English)

授業概要(Course outline)
From the end of the 19th century to the early 20th century, Western powers and Japan intensified their efforts to acquire colonies and expand their influence in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. As a result, the conflict between the powers eventually led to two world wars, and colonial rule and warfare had a major impact on the Pacific islands. Based on these historical backgrounds, this course aims to help students examine Japan and the US relationship in the 19th and 20th centuries, and how it has impacted the formation of the Pacific Ocean region.

到達目標(Learning Objectives)
The course aims to provide historical context and a deepened understanding of the formation of the Pacific region in the 19th and 20th centuries. Currently, the Pacific Ocean is commonly referred to by several names including Oceania, Micronesia, Polynesia, and Melanesia. The use of these names has strong ties to colonial rule and wars waged by Western countries and Japan. By discussing several examples of conflicts among countries over the Pacific Ocean, students are expected to understand the formation of the Pacific region.

授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Before/after each class meeting, students are expected to dedicate two hours to understanding the course content. Students are advised to enhance their comprehension of the subjects covered in the course by reading the recommended literature cited in the reference section and other course materials.

成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policies)
Your final grade for the course will be determined by your performance in two areas: a term-end report worth 70% and in-class contribution, which includes submission and description of worksheets at each session, and course attitude, worth 30%.
