Outline (in English)

授業概要(Course outline)
From the end of the 19th century to the early 20th century, the race to acquire colonies by Western powers intensified, and Western powers and Japan expanded their power in Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world. The involvement of Western nations and Japan with the Pacific world, even before colonization, was through exploratory voyages, whaling ships, traders, and missionaries, and over the ages, envy and contempt were mixed. This course aims to help students acquire a bird's-eye view of Western and Japanese perceptions of these Pacific islands.

到達目標(Learning Objectives)
The goal of this course is to deepen our understanding of the change in Western and Japanese perceptions toward the Pacific world in the context of historical background. Western and Japanese images of the “other” have often been a mixture of envy and contempt, and this way of perceiving the other has also been evident in the Pacific islands. At the end of the course, students are expected to grasp a part of the change in the Western world's perception of the “other.”

授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Before/after each class meeting, students are required to dedicate a minimum of three hours to comprehend the course material. Students are advised to read the reference materials listed in the reference section and other literature provided in class to deepen their understanding of the topics covered.

成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policies)
