Outline (in English)

(Course outline)We learn about the structure and development of the Holy Roman Empire, which unified Western and Central Europe for over 800 years. The Holy Roman Empire had a strange political structure in which the small countries that made up the empire relied on the authority of the emperor while carrying out the actual politics necessary for people's lives. Therefore, the emperor obtained a culture that satisfied the people spiritually from the Catholic church and Renaissance cities, and the small countries used it to gain the consent of the people and carry out actual politics. In this lecture, we will first introduce an overview of the Holy Roman Empire, and then learn what kind of technology, values, aesthetic sense, origin, and original ideas were devised from this society and passed on to future generations as a historical heritage.
(Learning Objectives)The purpose of this class is to examine the political community of the Holy Roman Empire, which did not take the form of a modern nation-state, in the historical context of the time, and to analyze the effects and limitations produced within the constraints of the time. It's about understanding. What you learn from there will depend on your active efforts. We will provide many hints in class to help you more critically understand the meaning of what you have learned in junior high school history and high school world history.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
・Be sure to read the handouts distributed in advance before class and keep the general content in mind (1 hour each time).
・Before class, I will research all the words I am learning for the first time and words I only know by name using reference books and the internet, and I will make notes on a handout (for 1 hour each time).
・After class, students will research on their own or ask questions to the instructor about points they did not understand during class (as appropriate).
(Grading Criteria/Policy)
・Evaluation will be based on the average score (20%), quizzes for each unit (30%), and final report (50%).
・Be able to systematically explain the development of the Holy Roman Empire [1st evaluation process: corresponds to the 30% quiz for each unit], and use the knowledge learned in class to explain the history of the Holy Roman Empire and European history in one's own way. The standard is to be able to critically position and discuss its impact [second evaluation process: corresponds to 50% of the term report].
