Outline (in English)

<Course outline> This course explores major themes of western history, particularly focusing on ancient and medieval periods. <Learning objectives> 1) Students are able to acquire basic knowledge about ancient and medieval history of the western world. 2) Students are able to understand history of the western world in view of its interaction with non-western worlds.
<Learning activities outside of classroom> Students have to spend at least two hours on preparation for and review of each class respectively. They are expected to read relevant books, such as those listed in the reference section, and learn by themselves. They also have to work on assignments given by the instructor.
<Grading policy> Class participation and assignments: 50% Final examination: 50%
