Outline (in English)

・This course covers the history of South Asia from the formation of the Mughal Empire in the 16th century to the independence of India and Pakistan from British colonial rule in 1947. This course also introduces some of the various primary historical sources explored in the study of South Asian history.
・By the end of the course, students are expected to understand social change in the South Asian region from a long-term perspective, recognise the existence of a variety of primary historical sources and develop an understanding of the complexity and fascination inherent in the process of historical research.
・Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. In particular, students are encouraged to re-read and review their notes and distributed handouts after each class. Students are also encouraged to use the references provided in class to research any questions or points of interest.
・The overall class grade is determined on the basis of the following items: final exam 70%, in-class contribution 30%.
