Outline (in English)

This is a course to learn Western traditional logic, especially categorical and hypothetical syllogisms.
The main aim of this course is to help students acquire the basic knowledge and skills needed to make valid syllogistic inferences.
By the end of the course, students should be able to understand the followings:
1. The inferences by using the relationship summed up in the square of opposition.
2. The operations on categorical propositions, e.g., obversion, conversion and contraposition.
3. The rules for testing the validity of categorical syllogisms.
4. The valid and invalid forms of hypothetical syllogisms.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: Term-end examination (65%). Short reports (25%) and Contribution in class (10%).
