Outline (in English)

We will learn the methods and the results of western philosophers, from the ancient period to the early medieval period, on how they consider the world (nature) and the nature of mind, and how they see their relations, by examining their thoughts and by reading their texts. The purpose of this course is to understand the fundamentals of western philosophy on these issues and, through this, to develop the ability to think logically and search for answers by oneself.
Students are expected by the end of course 1) to acquire basic knowledge and ideas of Western philosophy on issues such as the world (nature) and the nature of mind. 2) to understand the content and logical structure of the ideas of universality or diversity in the history of Western philosophy, and on what basis they were established and developed, and 3) to explain their understandings clearly and logically in their own words.
Before each class meeting, students are to read carefully the relevant text of the next class and to summarize what the text is arguing for. Required study time is two hours each before and after the class.
The grade will be decided on the following proportion. In-class contribution: 30%, Mid-term examination: 20%, Term-end examination or report: 50% (if no mid-term examination is given, it will be 70%).
