Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
Shinkai Makoto is Japanese animation director. His animation film is highly acclaimed not only in Japan but also overseas. In 2019, "Weathering With You" was released. Latest work "Suzume no Tojimari" was released in 2022. I decode Shinkai’s all animation works from various viewpoints.
【Learning Objectives】
The goal of this course is for students to acquire the skills to analytically decipher Makoto Shinkai animations as a visual works, scene by scene, and to be able to discuss in their own words the unique expression methods and narrative structure of animation.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
When watching animations or reading novels, develop the habit of objectively writing and talking about the details of the story in your own words, rather than just passively watching the film or reading the novel. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Grade will be based on reports 100%.
There will be no examinations.
The theme of the report is "Select one or more of Shinkai’s works discussed in class and wrapping up the report". Based on the content of the class, develop your own argument in your own words about the work you have chosen, based on the theme you have set for yourself.
