Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
This course deals with Japanese literature and film from 1945 to the 1960s. The social system, ideas, and values of postwar Japan changed greatly during the reconstruction process. we will examine people's lives and the emotions are not described in capitalized history, using novels and film adaptations . In addition, we will examines the changes associated with film adaptations from the perspective of censorship and collaboration between novelists and directors, and considers the significance and limitations of adaptation.

(Learning Objectives)
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
- Acquire knowledge of Japan's international position and cultural situation after the war.
- Explain about censorship by GHQ/SCAP.
- Discuss the process of creation, criticality, and contemporary significance of works, based on the historical and social background.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend 2 hours to understand the course content.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following Term-end examination: 70%, small report: 30%
