Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
This course deals with novel works from the Meiji period to the 1940's, when modern Japanese literature was established. We will analyze by referring to media such as photographs, magazines and cinema, how novelists Write about society . In addition, we will discuss the critical significance of pre-war novels for the present.
(Learning Objectives)
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
- Explained with specific examples that literary works have been established in relation to various media.
- Explain about censorship by the Home Ministry.
- Discuss the process of creation, criticality, and contemporary significance of works, based on the historical and social background.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend 2 hours to understand the course content.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following Term-end examination: 70%, small report: 30%
