Outline (in English)

【授業の概要(Course outline)】
To acquire basic knowledge of the objectives, content, significance and characteristics of social studies and civics education; to deepen understanding of the content and teaching methods, evaluation methods, and various issues in contemporary society; and to acquire the basis for creating classes that are in line with the essence of social studies at the secondary level. In social studies and civics education, there are many teacher-led, knowledge-intensive classes, such as "chalk and talk". However, future education will require students to be able to think, express, and present their own ideas in their own words in response to the "why" questions and issues they face in their own learning. We hope that students will acquire both theoretical and practical skills by learning the theory of objectives, academic skills, teaching materials, and teaching methodology from the perspective of the whole picture of social studies and civics.
【到達目標(Learning Objectives)】
The following three points are defined as the objectives of this course.
1. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the content of social studies and civics education and to acquire the basic knowledge necessary for secondary social studies teachers.
2. Understand the effective use of ICT and teaching materials according to the characteristics of junior high school social studies and senior high school civics, and be able to apply this knowledge to lesson design and practice.
3. Understand trends in practical research on junior high school social studies and senior high school civics, and apply this knowledge to the preparation of lesson plans and the development of teaching materials.
【授業時間外の学習(Learning activities outside of classroom)】
The following five points should be kept in mind for pre-study (preparatory study) and post-study (review and homework).
1. As pre-study, students are expected to carefully read the designated sections of the textbook, complete the preparatory part of the worksheet, and diligently prepare and work on the course materials.
2. as post-assignments, students are expected to work on the assignments for each class and submit a report on the assignments by the next class, as well as a final assignment (to develop their own teaching materials).
3. Students will be expected to follow and understand current political and economic news on a daily basis.
4. Students are required to read a civics textbook in junior high school social studies.
5. 2 hours of pre-course work and 2 hours and 30 minutes of post-course work are required.
【成績評価の方法と基準(Grading Criteria /Policy)】
Comprehensive evaluation will be based on class participation and contribution (15%), post-class study assignments from sessions 2-11 (25%), group development and practice of teaching materials (30%), and final assignment (development of teaching materials by each student) (30%).
