Outline (in English)

In this course you will acquire basic knowledge and skills related to English teaching methodology and second language acquisition. While learning about the qualifications required of English teachers at junior and senior high school levels, you will cultivate the communicative competence in English necessary for effective teaching in the near future. The course also aims to develop the ability to think and act on your own initiative to grasp the current situation and solve problems by observing the instructional context and individual learners. We will review the theoretical foundations of English language teaching covering topics such as the history of English language education, language teaching methodologies, language learning styles and strategies, second language acquisition, teaching English as an international language, intercultural understanding, the Course of Study, lesson plans, and the use of ICT. We will also focus on the practical aspects of communicative language teaching and deal with topics of direct relevance to classroom instruction, such as teaching four and integrated skills, grammar and vocabulary instruction, teaching English in junior and senior high schools, early childhood education and teaching English in elementary schools, and testing and assessment. Your work will be graded primarily on the basis of your participation, reflective papers, and micro-teaching. For this accelerated course, the recommended preparation and review time is approximately 8 hours a week per week.
