Outline (in English)

The aim of this course is to help student acquire an understanding of the most important issue of the German philosophy after Nazi Era, from the viewpoint of the paradoxical results of the traditional concept of "reason". It deals with four themes as follow: 1. the relation of totalitarianism and the authoritarian personality which was brought up through the modernization, 2. the concept of "reason" in the German classic philosophy and its transformation in the real world, 3. the communicative turn of philosophical thinking that Jewish victims persecuted by the Nazis found, 4. the possibility of the dialog free from domination, e.g. the freedom of speech and its mission for the democratic politics. By the end of the course, students should be able to give careful consideration to the matters of the "reason" in our liberal democratic society that appear as poverty, discrimination, and populism. Before each class meeting, students will be expected to spend two hours to understand the course content. Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following: term-end report: 70%, and in class contribution: 30%.
