Outline (in English)

The aim of the course is to develop effective communication
skills in English with a particular emphasis on listening
and speaking. Students will use English to understand and
respond to content that is relevant to their university life and
subsequent academic work.
[Learning Objectives]
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the
followings:
― Acquire fundamentals of English 4 skills; Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
― Understand how to connect English texts.
― Develop critical thinking skills.
[Learning Activities Outside of Classroom]
You need to spend the same amount of time as the lesson itself
for self-study both preview and review. Be sure to review what
has been said during class to prepare yourself for next class.

40%: Participation in class activities.
40%: Examinations (Midterm / Final).
20%: Assignments and Quizzes.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives

視聴覚教材とテキストを組み合わせ、リーディング、リスニング、ライティング、スピーキングの４技能を連携させながら学ぶ。加えて、文法を理解し運用することにより、「なんとなくわかる」状態から「確かにわかる」、「根拠が説明できる」ことを目指す。

到達目標Goal

文法・語彙力の裏付けによって、リスニング・リーディングのいずれでも文脈をきちんと把握できるようになる。取り上げる英文や会話文について、文法的な正しさに加えて、発音やイントネーションに着目し学習し、音声面からも英語として自然な表現を身に着けることができる。

春学期に引き続きBBC（英国放送協会）が各国に取材したドキュメンタリー形式のDVDを視聴し、 "Science and Technology", "Society and Sports", "World Interests"　の三つのジャンルに分類される各ユニットにおいて、基本的には１ユニットを前半・後半に分け､(1)トピックに関する掘り起こし､(2)Video clipsの内容理解､(3)サマリーの作成、そして(4)応用演習という流れで授業を進める。さらに適宜小テストを行い、ユニットで得た知識や語彙を増強する機会とする。
