Outline (in English)

1.Course outline
In this course, we will read English newspaper articles. Students will be trained in comprehending the meaning of a sentence based on its grammatical structure and figuring out the general content of a paragraph. The goal is to help students read a logical essay in English smoothly as a preparatory step to read specialized academic papers.

2.Learning objectives
In this course, students are expected to achieve the followings:

(a) Being able to interpret the content of a sentence correctly, as opposed to merely metaphrasing it.
(b) Being able to grasp the gist of each paragraph quickly and accurately summarize the main points of a whole article.
(c) Acquiring the commonly used styles of writing in articles from English newspapers and vocabulary words in various fields that are published in the textbook.

3.Learning activities outside of classroom
Preparatory study and review time for this course are 2 hours each.

(a) Preparation
With regard to the content of the day's class, you are required to clarify what you can understand and what you can't in advance. When attending a class in which we read a news article, you need to read through the whole article, looking up words and idioms that you do not know in the dictionary, and figure out the content of the article before class. In the case of a class when solving practice problems, you are expected to prepare your answers to the problems beforehand, reviewing the content of the article.

(b) Review
In order not to miss the problems that you missed in preparatory study again, you should organize your knowledge of word meanings and grammar by reviewing interpretations of the meanings of the sentences with complex structure and the answers to the practice problems that were illustrated in class. These reviews will lead to getting good marks on quizzes in each chapter.

4.Grading Criteria /Policy
Students will be assessed according to the following criteria:

Term-end examination: 60%
Quizzes: 20%
Usual performance score (e.g., attitude in class, preparation for classes, other homework): 20%
