Outline (in English)
【Course outline】This course focuses on basic English skills needed in an academic setting. Not only receptive skills such as reading and listening but also productive skills such as writing and speaking are targeted. Students will have a good command of English by themselves if they comprehend English texts by treating them analytically and considering cultural aspects which will be given in the lectures.
【Learning Objectives】
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
1. to acquire the ability to read a single sentence accurately, and to understand the function of paragraphs, and how paragraphs are correlated to each other
2. to learn and practice methods of expression and paragraph structure appropriate for the transmission of information and opinions
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Input Week: Read the reading material in each unit
Output Week: Complete Check Your Understanding, and A in Sentence Writing
Review the content in each class and improve the four skills

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
大学教育において必要となる英語力を身につけることを目指す。受信面の向上だけではなく、発信面の向上にも取り組む。英文を論理的に、時に文化的事情を踏まえ読解し、読解時に得た情報や知識を使い、発信していくことを身につけることで、自分の力で英語を駆使できる力を養う。

1. 一文を正確に読み取る力、パラグラフの機能とパラグラフの関連性を把握する力を身につけること
2. 情報や意見の発信に応じた表現方法やパラグラフの構成を学び、実践できること

本授業における予習・復習の時間は各１時間以上を標準とする。週に一回100分の授業のみで、到達目標を高いレベルで達成することは極めて難しい。履修者諸君の授業時間外の努力も必要である。
予習：《偶数週》教科書のReadingの本文を読み、自分の理解が及ばない点を挙げておく。
《奇数週》①Writing Strategyの解説を読み、自分の理解が及ばない点を挙げておく。②Check Your Understandingの問いに答える。③Sentence WritingのAの問いに答える。
復習：授業内で伝えた内容を確認し、Reading, Writing, Speakingに取り組む
