* Mass Media Research *
The media are everywhere in our industrialized world today. One of the important roles of the media is to extend our knowledge of the environment beyond places and events that we can experience directly. The media can determine our perceptions about the facts, norms, and values of society through selective presentation and by emphasizing certain themes. The media can affect audience conceptions of social reality and also help the audience to form their attitudes toward an issue, a thing or a nation. These concepts will be discussed in this subject.

The media are everywhere in our industrialized world today. One of the important roles of the media is to extend our knowledge of the environment beyond places and events that we can experience directly. The media can determine our perceptions about the facts, norms, and values of society through selective presentation and by emphasizing certain themes. The media can affect audience conceptions of social reality and also help the audience to form their attitudes toward an issue, a thing or a nation. These concepts will be discussed in this subject.
到達目標Goal
This course gives an introduction to current theoretical and practical debates regarding the role of the mass media in today’s society. Some of the topics covered include media businesses, the dual role of the media as information source and entertainment, research into short-term and long-term effects of the media, media audiences, and mass communication models. During the course, students will learn how to question the degree to which the media influence us versus how we use the media to fit our preconceived ideas.

Classes will consist of a series of short lectures and other visual materials, followed by group and class discussions on the concepts covered in the lectures. In addition, students will be required to prepare for class by reading assigned articles on the topics of the following class. In the first semester, students will mainly learn theory and an overview of the different aspects in mass communication. In the second semester, students will do their own research project regarding mass media effects.
Feedback on assignments submitted by students will be provided in
class or through the Learning Management System.
Please note that the teaching approach may vary according to which threat level we are at. The details will be announced through the Learning Management System.

Students give presentations on their selected topics and evaluate their peers’ presentations. In addition, students will take part in class discussions about each presentation topic
授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students need to prepare for and review each session by using textbooks, references, and distributed materials.
Students are expected to read reference materials for the next class. In addition, they need to write online forum postings after class for review purposes in the first semester. For the second semester, they will need to write a weekly learning journal to keep a record of their research progress. Therefore, students are expected to take about four hours for preparation and review a class.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
1st Semester: In-class participation (20%), a presentation (10%), a take-home exam (10%) and a written assignment (10%). 2nd Semester: Assessment will consist of 10 weekly learning journals (10%), a summary of pieces of literature (10%), a group presentation (10%) and a group research paper (20%). Note that if you miss 4 classes or more, you cannot pass this subject.

There were no particular requirements for this course from students. However, I would like this course to enable students to apply what they learnt in class to their daily lives through questioning general phenomena in their lives.
