Outline and objectives

Learning practical English for communicating in a global society

Goal

Although emphasis is on oral communication, students will practice and improve proficiency in all four language skills. Students should be able to express themselves clearly in discussions and during presentations.

This course will be given entirely in English. Students will participate in a variety of activities that encourage listening and speaking English. These activities include role play dialogues, pair and group discussions, and presentations given by students on various topics of interest.
Feedback on students' performance will be given in class, as well as through written assignments in class and online using Google Classroom. Students may also correspond with the instructor using e-mail.
NOTE: For the month of April classes will be conducted ONLINE.
After the Golden Week Holiday, we will change to an in-person, face-to-face classroom format. Instructions will be provided for students who need to continue to take classes online from May.

2:Unit 1: People and Events

Dialogue & textbook activities: grammar explanation. Pair & group work.Instructions on writing a short paragraph.

3:Unit 1 Video: Role models

Video Worksheet activities.Discussion and pair work.
Reading homework.

4:Unit 2: Holidays and Festivals

Grammar review. Discussion. Review writing tips.

5:Unit 2: Celebrations

Video.
Instructions on preparing for and giving presentations.

6:Unit 3: Trends and entertainment

Grammar review. Reading and discussion in small groups.

7:Unit 3: Trends pt. 2

Video content and worksheet: A hotel manager. Discussion.
Quiz on Units 1-3.

8:Unit 4: Identity & Personality

Lecture: Describing people and their characteristics.

Students will give short presentations in pairs/groups on topics from the previous 4 chapters.

Discussion about future goals and plans.

13:Unit 6: Changes & Life experiences

Reading and vocabulary review.

Final quiz on Units 4-6. Course wrap up.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students are expected to complete homework assignments prior to the next class session.
Approximately 1-2 hours of homework is required of students every week.

Other handouts and materials related to course content will be distributed in class. Students should have a notebook and/or loose sheets of paper to take notes and to hand in homework.

Students are allowed up to 3 unexcused absences per semester.
Students who are absent during a test/quiz must contact the instructor to make it up within one week.
Arriving late to class twice = one absence (except for a good reason, such as late trains)
