Outline (in English)
This class aims to provide students with further opportunities to improve their English proficiency acquired in English 1 and 2 classes. Students will read, write, hear and speak about various topics of Japan, especially Japanese culture in the world in English in order fully to have an academic skill. The spring semester focuses on understanding how Japan and Japanese culture are recognized, accepted, or sometimes criticized in the world. The various reading and listening materials can give students a lot of information, and based on these, they try to write a comment or speak his/her opinion in English. To see the acceptance of Japanese culture, students will look into an entry of Japanese words in Oxford English Dictionary. Analyzing the definition and quotations of these words contributes to students’ understanding Japanese culture. Concerning the class procedure, students take a listening test at the beginning, try to read a short English passage and write a comment after watching DVD. They also read an English essay on the background of Japanese culture and characteristics in class. It is essential for students to take three kinds of exams—writing, presentation, and final reading & listening.

English1および2で習得した英語運用能力である読む､書く､聴く､話すの四技能を使い、国際語である英語を通じて日本文化を世界的文脈の中で相対化し、英語資料を理解して批判的に分析したうえで英語による意見の発信ができる能力を養成する。

・日本文化に関するアカデミックな英文を精読し、読解力を上げる

授業始めにﾘｽﾆﾝｸﾞ小ﾃｽﾄ、その後DVD視聴または英文読解、学習内容に関するｺﾒﾝﾄを英語で書いて提出、添削して返却する。DVD視聴のないときは英文読解を行い、音読・日本語訳等が課される。今期は日本文化の世界での受容をﾃｰﾏとするため、Oxford English Dictionary見出し語となった日本語を調べ、英語ﾌﾟﾚｾﾞﾝﾃｰｼｮﾝを行うので、学内PCによる辞書検索、Writing、Presentationが課される。これら課題のうち、ﾘｽﾆﾝｸﾞ、ﾃﾞｨｸﾃｰｼｮﾝ、DVDおよび英文理解に関わる課題は授業内で解答する。ﾌﾟﾚｾﾞﾝﾃｰｼｮﾝ原稿Writingは添削指導、終了後にｽﾗｲﾄﾞ、Speaking音声(単語の発音、ｱｸｾﾝﾄ、ｲﾝﾄﾈｰｼｮﾝ)、元にしたOEDﾃﾞｰﾀ等について、各自にｺﾒﾝﾄしてﾌｨｰﾄﾞﾊﾞｯｸする。

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
ﾃｷｽﾄの音声はWebｽﾄﾘｰﾐﾝｸﾞで視聴可能。PartIとIIがあるが、ﾃｷｽﾄにはIIのｽｸﾘﾌﾟﾄしかないためIについてはDictation用の冊子を配布する。授業ではDictationと要所の説明を行うが、ｽｸﾘﾌﾟﾄの和訳はしない。より理解するには予め目を通してくるとよい。Readingは速読用の比較的易しいものからWeb上の記事、学術文などさまざまなものを用意する。内容や英文の質の高度なものを扱うときは、自宅での十分な予習が必要。また、WritingやPresentationに用いるOxford English Dictionaryを調べた資料は期日までに必ず準備する。準備できていないと授業中にWriting、Presentationが行えず、試験未受験扱いとなる。Listening小ﾃｽﾄは準備の必要なし。本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
期末試験60%、平常点40%。平常点は授業参加度10%、ﾘｽﾆﾝｸﾞ小ﾃｽﾄ平均点10%、Writing・Presentation・Speaking10%、その他授業内での課題10%が原則。よって、評価点は試験60 点、平常点40 点の合計100 点で、60 ％以上の得点で合格。授業初めのﾘｽﾆﾝｸﾞ小ﾃｽﾄ終了後は遅刻と認めず欠席とし、ﾘｽﾆﾝｸﾞ小ﾃｽﾄも0 点となる。学期末のPresentation、原稿作成Writing は授業内試験として扱い、単位取得に必須。このほか授業中の課題を遂行しない、あらかじめ割り当てられた担当課題があるのに無断欠席などは評価点がﾏｲﾅｽされる。授業では全員が担当をこなすため出席状況の良いことが必須で、欠席4 回以上の者は原則として単位修得の資格を失う。
学生の意見等からの気づきChanges following student comments
Oxford English Dictionaryを自宅で引くにはVPN接続が必要で、これが難しいとの指摘があった。学内PCであればすぐにアクセスできるので、自宅で使えない学生には学内PCの利用をすすめる。また、Writingが難しい、苦手であるという意見があるが、英語４技能を学習するため欠かすことはできない。構文・文法の知識を活用して短文を書く練習、日本語をそのまま英語に置き換えるだけで失敗した誤文の訂正問題などを通じて英文の質を上げ、英語を書くときの頭の切り替え方を身につけてほしい。エッセイなどを書くときはサンプルを用意するが、どうしてもコツがつかめない学生には個人指導を行い、どのように考えて書くかを説明したい。

授業には辞書を持参し、ｽﾏｰﾄﾌｫﾝ等でｲﾝﾀｰﾈｯﾄ上の辞書を使用することは原則として認めない。
