Outline and objectives

This is the second part of the course, “Current Issues in the English Speaking World,” aiming to continue helping students to become more fluent English speakers by sharing their ideas on cultural and social content popularly discussed in the English speaking world.

Goal

In this course, students will read a variety of content-based articles, and readings will be supplemented with listening exercises to help students improve their fluency in English. The classes are designed for pair and group discussions to provide the students with a friendly environment to express themselves in English. Students will also be required to complete some writing tasks such as paragraphs and short essays to express their ideas in a more organized way.

Students will participate in a variety of activities that involve all four skills, but with a special emphasis on reading and speaking. Students will be asked to read short articles, prepare for discussion, usually in pairs or groups. Feedback on all assignments will be provided during the class.

To warm up, students will make some discussion on the main topic of the unit. They will start reading the assigned article.

Superfood and Supplement Boom

Each group will deliver a presentation following the course contents and objectives. In the remaining time, students will start with unit 3 topic discussion.

Students will be provided with some tips to read more analytically: understanding main ideas. Developing their opinions on the topic by responding to the article.

To warm up, students will make some discussion on the main topic of the unit. They will start reading the assigned article.

Students will be provided with some tips to read more analytically: understanding main ideas. Developing their opinions on the topic by responding to the article.

14:Final Exam

Final exam of the semester will be conducted

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students are expected to complete assignments every week in preparation for discussion. The assignments might require research.

University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

Textbooks

21st Century Reading: Creative thinking and reading with TED talks 4, Cengage Publishing and written by Laurie Blass, and Jessica Williams (The same textbook from part I). ¥2840

Additional newspaper articles will also be provided by the instructor in class.

Grading criteria

Class participation: 20%
Group Presentation: 30%
Writing assignments: 10%
Final Exam: 40%

More than 3 absences will result in automatic failure of the course.
