授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
This English 3 course builds upon the skills and knowledge students gained in English 1 and English 2. and requires students to exercise all four communication skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The course explores different topics related to "Modern and Future Society", from the perspectives of an international journalist. The course will compare Japanese society/lifestyle and other cultures. There are three major themes of the course which are inter-related:
1) The importance of food in cultures
2) Meeting people from different cultures
3) Living in different cities
到達目標Goal
Students will enhance their English reading skills and critical thinking through reading various texts and will deepen their understanding of different cultures in the process. Students will improve their communication ability by practicing voicing their opinions about important issues related to society and lifestyle.

The textbook for this subject will be supplemented by additional BBC News articles or TED Talks, that will require comprehension analysis. Students will be required to prepare questions for discussion in small (random) groups and present their group opinions to the class.
All assignments will be distributed, submitted and returned to students digitally via Google Classroom. Written assignments will be returned with detailed comments on how students can improve their writing skills.
This is an online course and all lessons will be taught using Zoom.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 2 hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.
There will be some short, simple, written homework assignments designed to test the students understanding of the ideas presented in the major themes of the course. Each homework assignment will be 10% of total course value.

Pair and Group Participation: 20%
There will be 10 assessments during the semester. Each assessment will have a course value of 10%.
In principle, no more than 3 absences will be permitted per semester for the student to receive academic credit in the course.

Please be able to access Japanese/English and English/English Dictionaries. A Thesaurus will also be useful. Apps for smartphones / mobile devices are acceptable.
Also, a portable device that supports a Word Processor (all assignments should be submitted in Google Docs format)
Access to Zoom (Zoom.us) is required. Students will be required to use headphones if joining the lesson from Hosei University classrooms.
Students should know their Hosei University Gmail account details.

We will use Google “Classroom” to send, submit and record all assignments. Students will be required to join the subject using “Classroom” and will be required to change their profile on Gmail with their "Class Number).
