Outline (in English)
You will mainly learn effective English reading in this class. You will express (speak and write) your thought of topics in the textbook in English and exchange them with your classmates. You are expected to make a good learning community through participation in this class.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
この授業では、主に効果的な英語のリーディングについて学びます。みなさんは、教科書のトピックに関してみなさんの考えを英語で話したり、書いたりして表現し、クラスの人と意見交換をし、多様な視点を学ぶことを目標とします。この授業では、英語の4技能(リスニング、スピーキング、リーディング、ライティング)を統合的に学習します。
到達目標Goal
You will try to achieve these three goals :1) to learn reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, summarizing, paraphrasing or inferencing; 2) to develop an English vocabulary; and 3) to learn and practice summary writing.

1) You will take a quiz of vocabulary and summary writing of your reading assignments.
2) You will practice overshadowing text.
3) You will do a lot of pair work and group work.
4) You need to bring an English-English dictionary.
5) You will discuss the topic of each Chapter with your classmates.
6) I will give you my oral and written feedback on your assignments in class.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
You are expected:
1) to read every week reading assignment and look up words and phrases you don’t know in the dictionary
2) to prepare for quizzes for each Chapter.
3) to watch or listen to an English program regularly
4) to practice overshadowing text every week
5) to do assignments, submit them, and meet the deadline
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around four hours a week for a two-credit course and around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

class participation (20%), quizzes (10%), assignments (10%), and final examination (60%)
